Having previously rented stables, she was familiar with the challenges of outdoor yard management, particularly during the increasingly wet winters.
“The stables we rent are lovely, but they’re outdoors and with the long wet winters we have now it makes everything so much harder being outside. Having everything under one roof will make life so much more practical.”
For Gemma, the new yard would be a long-term investment — part of her forever home — so quality and durability were essential.
“Quality of the product was extremely important. This is our forever home and a big investment, so whatever we chose needed to last. Horse welfare was also a big priority, so ventilation and light were really important to me. And because it’s our private yard, it had to look nice too — not like an industrial building.”
Although she explored several suppliers and obtained multiple quotes, the difference in specification quickly became clear.
“Other quotes were cheaper, but the spec and materials just didn’t compare to the Cheval Liberté barn. It really felt like comparing apples and pears.”
Gemma ultimately chose a Cheval Liberté Manoir Barn paired with Prestige internal stables, drawn to the design, durability and thoughtful features.
“I love that the barn is steel framed, which gives it much more stability and durability. It also looks fantastic compared to some American-style barns which can look cheaper and less substantial.”
Small design details also stood out, including:
“You can really design it exactly how you need it.”
“Cheval Liberté were the perfect choice for Hickstead especially with their commitment to absolutely no compromises with the quality of product and service provided. Working in partnership with Cheval Liberté is rewarding on several levels – not only are they experts in the field of equestrianism, but they also deliver on everything they promise backed with real enthusiasm and professionalism.
On top of this, Cheval Liberté is a family owned and operated business, just like Hickstead is. The working relationship with Cheval Liberté is seamless, they truly understand us and our needs on every level, and right from the start they have gone above and beyond for Hickstead which we are extremely grateful for”.
Although Gemma and her horses are yet to fully move in, the finished barn has already exceeded expectations.
“It feels so roomy, light and airy and I can’t wait to get my horses moved in.”
Friends and neighbours who have visited have also been impressed.
“Everyone who has seen it has been very complimentary and absolutely loves it.”
Without hesitation.
“Yes, definitely. Everyone we dealt with was helpful, professional and very understanding when weather delays meant we had to move the installation date. I love everything about it.”
